This report highlights the work of the Women’s International Peace Centre in partnership with AFRABU to advance inclusive governance, women’s leadership, and peacebuilding in Burundi. The initiative responded to persistent gender and structural inequalities that limit the participation of women, youth, and marginalized groups in governance and decision-making processes. Through an integrated approach that combined capacity building, advocacy, policy engagement, and community dialogue, the initiative strengthened leadership skills, promoted gender-responsive governance, and encouraged greater civic participation while supporting the implementation of key frameworks such as UN Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 2250 and the National Youth, Peace and Security Strategy.

The report documents key activities including leadership and advocacy trainings, youth empowerment sessions, South–South learning exchanges, community dialogues, and targeted studies on youth participation in peace structures and the implementation of CEDAW in Burundi. It highlights the impact of these interventions in strengthening collaboration between civil society, government, and media actors, enhancing the leadership capacities of women and youth, and generating evidence to inform inclusive policy and advocacy efforts. The report also outlines key lessons and recommendations for sustaining inclusive participation, strengthening civic engagement, and advancing peace and democratic governance in Burundi.
