As the Executive Director of Score Beyond Leadership and a certified basketball coach, Mavita Ali stands at the intersection of sports, leadership, and climate justice. Her innovative approach to empowering women and youth has left an indelible mark on communities grappling with climate challenges. Through sports, Mavita transforms lives, nurtures leadership, and champions environmental resilience.

Mavita’s journey began when sports opportunities propelled her into leadership, building her confidence and shaping her vision. Today, she uses sports as a powerful intervention tool to address pressing issues such as women’s leadership, education, livelihoods, and environmental health. Her work places rural women—often the backbone of their families and communities—at the heart of climate action.

Rural women, Mavita emphasizes, are deeply connected to natural resources like water, firewood, and fertile soil, which are essential for their families’ survival. These women experience firsthand the impact of resource scarcity and environmental degradation. Their unique perspectives make them critical stakeholders in climate decision-making.

Mavita advocates for decentralizing climate conversations to village and parish levels, enabling women to engage with representatives and hold them accountable. However, she notes the need for training women in communication, their rights, and accountability to ensure their voices influence policy.

Driving Change through Sports and Green Skills

Mavita integrates sports as a unifying and motivational tool to mobilize communities, foster teamwork, and encourage mindset shifts. Sports, she believes, create a platform for positive messaging on climate resilience, offering relatable and engaging ways to inspire action.

In tandem with sports, Mavita prioritizes green skilling, focusing on practices such as recycling and adding value to residues. Women are trained in climate-smart agriculture and innovative solutions like energy-saving stoves and pellets. These practical, accessible strategies empower women to mitigate climate challenges while improving their quality of life.

One of the most significant obstacles Mavita addresses is the elitist language surrounding climate change. For rural women, the terminology often feels abstract and disconnected from their daily realities. By simplifying this language and linking it to tangible outcomes, Mavita ensures women can relate to and engage with climate action.

Her programs emphasize participatory tools like sports and arts to bridge the gap between knowledge and action. She also supports benchmarking and exchange programs, allowing communities to learn from successful climate resilience initiatives.

Mavita’s work extends beyond individual empowerment. She fosters networks to create market linkages for women’s green skills products and promotes research and pilot studies to identify effective community solutions. Her initiatives aim to build a sustainable, scalable model that addresses immediate needs while contributing to long-term climate resilience.

The Bigger Picture

Mavita’s holistic approach highlights the inseparable link between women’s empowerment and climate justice. She champions a vision where rural women are not just beneficiaries but active participants in designing and implementing strategies for climate resilience. Her work underscores the transformative potential of sports and green skills in creating cohesive, sustainable communities.

Through her unwavering commitment, Mavita continues to inspire change, ensuring that women’s voices are central to climate action and that rural communities thrive in the face of environmental challenges.
